Description

This paper is an explication of causal analysis, with particular attention to path analysis, from a number of traditionally neglected aspects which have now become important in light of path analysis' increasing use not only in social scientific research but also in the natural sciences. Turning first to recursive system analysis, it touches first upon that Simon-Blalock methodology which may be said to be the prototype of path analysis and then goes on to deal with the issues of identification, variable standardization, and statistical tests as encountered in path analysis. Beyond that, it presents some practical examples of handling the issue of mutual causation in non-recursive models, and further discusses expanding the path analysis model in order to deal with items outside the scope of traditional path analysis. Finally, it shows a way from path analysis to that covariance structure analysis pioneered by Joreskog et al and gives some pointers for dealing with more complex issues in a consistent manner.
