Abstract

Departmental Bulletin Paper
An Encounter is the second of fifteen stones that make up the final version ~f of James Joyce's Dubliners. The purpose of this essay is : first, to retrace the story so that the reader may be reminded of the subtleties Joyce implanted here and there ; second, to organize them in such a way that the intended ""epiphany"" can be understood to some extent. A special focus is placed on the nature of the juvenile potagonist/narrator, the pervert's motives, the significance of other characters, and, above all, what is achieved by this apparently provocative and morbid story. Prince, je congnois tout en somme, Je congnois coulourez et blesmes, Je congnois Mort qui tout consomme, Je congnois tout, fors que moymesmes.^(1)
