This paper is an analysis of "Jogaku Zasshi", (The Woman's Education Magazine) and of Yoshiharu Iwamoto's concept of "Lifelong Education". In this paper I analyse Jogaku Zasshi as an examle of printed texts in lifelong education during the Meiji Period (1868-1912). Jogaku Zasshi was a typical general magazine for ambitious women of those days and at the same time, some educational texts were presented for housewives and women who began learning late in life at the time. Jogaku Zasshi had various characteristics and regularly printed unique articles, for example, women's rights, abolition of prostitution, prohibition of alcohol, education of women, literary criticism, housekeeping and first aid. Up to now, the perspective of life-long education for women in the Meiji Era has not been examined yet. Iwamoto's writings on the education of women encouraged many women to get higher education, and his publication of Jogaku Zasshi assisted many local living women to study. His views on the education of women and the role of Jogaku Zasshi have not yet been properly appreciated in the history of lifelong education in the Meiji Era.
