With the purpose of obtaining the basic materials of nutritional education for the prevention of dental caries, we examined the living and environmental factors influencing the dental caries of pre-school children.1) The ratio of dental caries found in 348 examinees was 32.2% 2) A significantly higher ratio of dental caries was found in the examinees who took meals irregularly or ate between meals. 3) What was often given for eating between meals were snack foods, ice-creams, jellies, etc. Those who were eating such snack foods, carbonated drinks, chewing gums, etc. were found to be significantly high in the ratio of dental caries. 4) Those examinees who were often taking juices and/or sports drinks showed a high ratio of dental caries.

5) Those examinees who used to eat or drink before going to bed were found to be significantly high in the ratio of dental caries. 6) Those examinees who used to go to bed late at night were shown to be significantly high in the ratio of dental caries. However, the relation between the time of going to bed and the dental caries was not observed. 7) Those examinees who were low in the intake frequency of eating foods that were tough for chewing (the degree of chewing toughness: 10), such as dried mirin-seasoned sardines, showed a significantly high ratio of dental caries. However, as the overall frequency of intake of such foods was rather low, this factor should be explored for a further examination.
