Abstract

This study concerns the thermal environment of a CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) room, located in the Kanto are of Japan, and its comparison to the thermal environment of a 2 x 4 rock wool room. The CLT room has CLT as its external insulation in a wood frame construction, and the 2 x 4 room has rock wool thermal insulation for its inner insulation. For this study, we calculated the annual load of the heating and cooling for the CLT and 2 x 4 rooms by computer simulation using a LESCOM system. Through a comparison of the two rooms, it was found that the CLT room had a temperature of 1.3℃ lower in the summer than the 2 x 4 room. From this, it was determined that amount of energy used for heating and cooling of the CLT room was less than that for the 2 x 4 room. Thus it can be stated that it is effective to use CLT for external heat insulation for wooden structures and that its effectiveness is comparable to that of rock wool thermal insulated environments.
