Since the foundation of Fukui Kosen (Natonal Institute of Technology, Fukui College), "Kosen English club" has continued to attract students interested in learning English besides regular classes. This paper reports how extra-curricular activities have helped improve students' proficiency in English and their motivation to keep studying it. Looking back on the history of those extracurricular activities, the author, who has been encouraging students to participate in the nationwide Kosen English presentation contest since 2007, rediscovered English learning from the students' point of view and obtained various findings to make the present club activities more meaningful. Through ten years of trials and errors and with the aid of enthusiastic fellow teachers, Fukui Kosen finally won first prize in 2017. Based on this experience, the author considers how to improve the present conditions in which English is taught at Fukui Kosen, and makes some suggestions to get the students motivated to use English on a larger scale.
