In Japanese, the word “kontentsu” (derived from “contents”) often refers to information regarding manga, anime, videogame, or other information properties, mainly pop culture content. It is a narrowed usage of English concept of “content”. In this article, it is investigated how the executive branches in Japan accept the concept and apply it to the Japanese policy in 2000s. Judicial definition of this concept in 2004 is also argued referring to the copyright act and the intellectual property act. Then, it is statistically analyzed how the English word “content” was introduced into Japanese society from 1990s to 2000s using newspaper articles, and the usage of the word “kontentsu” will be shown to be categorized in three ways.
