Description

The purpose of this study is to reanalyze the Self, a mental health inventory for office workers, in order to investigate the statistical validity of the scale s structure. This is because the Self is not based on statistical evidence; instead, it is based on a hypothetical model. Therefore, first of all, on the factor level, the Self does not have sufficient reliability. Second, the Self uses the Egogram to measure personality factors; however, the total score obtained using an Egogram is irrelevant. Consequently, personality factors cannot be one of the components of the subscales. Subsequently, a factor analysis of the original data was performed, and the following five factors were extracted: (1) Anxiety-Depression, (2) Willingness to work, (3) Complaints about the work, (4) Coping with stress, and (5) Physical symptoms. The coefficient α of each factor exceeded .80, confirming sufficient reliability; thus, the structural validity was confirmed. Further, it was also revealed that the Self is useful as a multifaceted scale; this is because the five newly found factors largely corresponded to the Self's hypothetical model, i.e., the healthiness of social life, of life style, and of mind and body.
