In Orationes (Prayers) Anselm of Canterbury called Saint Mary mundi reconciliatrix (reconciler of the world), though this is written only once. Originally this denomination was used not for Mary but for Christ. The expression mundi reconciliatrix, however, uses the strict senses of the words, even though it is revolutionary. Anselm could use it for Saint Mary because he added mundi (of the world) to reconciliatrix (reconciler). In this case reconciler of the world is used in a general sense. On the other hand, Anselm uses reconciliator (reconciler) for Christ without the word 'mundi.' Consequently, 'reconciler of the world' is not inconsistent with the original meaning of reconciliator (reconciler). It was possible because Anselm composed his prayer with thoughtful attention and with strict use of words. Anselm recognized Saint Mary's unequaled greatness and he described her as 'reconciler of the world.'
