Description

Edmund Burke published on April 23,1770., one of the greatest of his writings, Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents, Prompted by the Wilkes Affair. The purpose of his pamphlet was to explain the cause of the discontents manifested in popular support for the demagogue John Wildes and to offer a solution for the discontents. Burke found the cause in a "double cabinet" or "system of favoritism" plotted by "King's Men" or "King's Frends" and the solution for the problem in the advancement of a party fovernment.
