説明

The principal aim of this paper is to examine the significance of Burke's Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents. In his pamphlet, Burke describes the importance of political party and insisuts on its value. It was a bold step, for party was almost unanimously despised in the eighteenth century. Party was still mostly used in a pejorative sense to suggest something narrow, selfish and unpatriotic. But Burke changed this low estimation of party and saw in it the only sure defense against the crown's offensive. He welcomed it as a device necessary to responsible government and advocated it as something conductive to the public good. Burke's defense of party in Present Discontents is an important landmark in the advancement of modern party government.
