ウィレム・デ・クーニングは、アメリカ抽象表現主義の旗手として、戦後アメリカのみならず20世紀後半を代表する芸術家の1人である。デ・クーニングは生涯に数多くの女性像を描いたが、1950～55年のいわゆる『女シリーズ』の女性像は、ひとたび抽象絵画を経験した画家の作品だけに、1940～45年に制作された初期女性像とは明確な違いがある。それはデ・クーニングという１人の芸術家の人間的成長ということでは片づけられない問題を含んでいる。本稿は、代表作《女Ⅰ》に焦点を当て、変形の問題、イコノロジー的な意味、画家自身の言葉などを分析し、『女シリーズ』のもっている意味を、デ・クーニングの抽象絵画体験との関連において考察しようとするものである。

Willem de Kooning is considered as one of the great inventors of forms of twentieth century, and the fascination his drawings present, apart from their intrinsic qualities, is their revelation of this part of the creative act. De Kooning had always had a change of ainting style, probing creativity, pushing on from one style to the next style. The battle between figuration and abstraction was essential to his art as he had moved from black form to white color of the 1940s to the ferocious Woman Series of the 1950s, through the landscapes and lyrical abstractions. This thesis intends to reconsider the significance of woman series, especially "Woman I".
