It is said that "few if any political thinkers of the twentieth century have attracted public attention and scholarly discussion as wide-ranging as has Hannah Arendt". The substance of Arendt's wide-ranging work could be said to be the reevaluation of the sense of the word of politics. What is politics like for her? To trace her endeavor of this reevaluation will make us possible to understand the main body of her thought and to establish our perspective of reading Arendt's work. The purpose of this paper is to make clear the relationship of her concepts such as politics, freedom, the presence of others and plurality. And for that I would like to introduce our own theory of gift, which put emphasis on the importance of the phase of acceptance or refusal by recipients. This pap e r consists of the following chapters: Introduction Chap.l: Politics and Freedom Chap.2: Freedom and the Presence of Others Chap.3: The Price of Freedom Chap.4: Gift of "Who" and the Presence of Others Concluding Remarks: Towards a Social Theory of Others By considering such topics, I would like to su g gest a possibility of understanding Arendt's work in a context of a social theory of others.
