Creating designer babies by genetic engineering is often denounced as imposing the parents’ needs and preferences on their offspring. Viewed in perspective, however, conventional child rearing often disregards child’s rights as well. This paper examines two cases concerning religious autonomy. First, Amish parents are allowed to deny their children two years of high school education required by law. As they offer alternative training at home, I argue that the truncated schooling does not necessarily compromise the child’s right. The second case is religious circumcision performed on boys. In 2012 a German court ruled that circumcision for non-medical reasons is unlawful because it violates a boy’s right to bodily integrity. Moreover, the irreversible mark infringes on his religious freedom. I therefore conclude that non-therapeutic circumcision on minors should not be tolerated at least in countries where the citizens can choose which religion they practice.
