This paper analyzes a newly developed English placement test (TEPT-1) via classical item analysis (i.e., item difficulty analysis, item discrimination analysis, and distractor efficiency analysis). Participants were 171 Tenri University students (mainly freshmen and sophomores) who were taking required English classes. Descriptive statistics revealed that TEPT-1 is reasonably well constructed; e.g., test scores are normally distributed. Also, several reliability indexes showed satisfactory results. The results of the item difficulty analysis and the item discrimination analysis identified some problematic test items, and those bad items were closely examined in terms of distractor efficiency. Suggestions for the test item refinement were proffered.
