eng=Badminton athletes require extensive leg muscle strength and power for agile movements. The lunge is a basic skill that allows the athlete to move from the playing center to the hitting position and subsequently returning to the playing center. Few studies have reported the reliability of badminton-specific movement tests. This study sought to investigate the reliability and validity of leg muscle power and on-court agility. Twenty five university competitive players (17 men and eight women) performed the three-direction lunge jump test twice with a two to seven day interval between each trial. Standing long jump, five long jump, and badminton-specific movement skills were measured. The intra-test reliability (i.e., intra-class correlation coefficient) was 0.92, 0.89, and 0.78 for the forward, backward, and front-back lunge, respectively. Significant correlations were found between lunges in three directions and leg muscle power (r = 0.66−0.90, P < 0.05) as well as on-court agility performance (|r| = 0.45−0.79, P < 0.05). But there was no significant correlation between lunges in three directions and movement time for badminton footwork and rank order of the subjects. These results indicate that the lunge jump test in three directions is a reliable method for assessing badminton-specific movement performance.
