大正時代（1912-1926）は、天理教の教祖三十年祭から四十年祭にかけての時期とも重なり、天理教もまた大正デモクラシーの空気の中で教勢を大きく伸ばすことができた。この時期の天理教はデモクラシーの思想や運動に対して対社会的応答を行い、またこのデモクラシーの気運は天理教内にも浸透していった。教団機関誌『道乃友』及び「諭達」を含めた公式表明文書において、そうした天理教の時局対応の状況を読み取ることができる。『道乃友』誌上では、労働問題への取り組み、婦人問題や部落問題などの人権問題、さらには社会事業に対する論説がこの時期さまざまに登場し、教内の論客たちがそれぞれに論陣を張った。『道乃友』は、大正後半以降に編集方針が大きく変わり、教えに基づく社会時評に替わって教話や信仰体験記が増えてくる。教祖四十年祭は「世直りの旬」として位置付けられたが、教団としては、対社会的な発信や運動よりも、この年祭に向けた教勢倍加の名の下、諸々の活動を内向きに転換するようになったのである。

The Taisho era (1912-1926), which coincided with the period between Oyasama's 30th and 40th anniversaries in Tenrikyo, was the time when Tenrikyo was able to realize dramatic growth in the atmosphere of Taisho Democracy. During this period, Tenrikyo was socially active in responding to the thoughts and movements of Taisho Democracy while the latter's trend was seeping into Tenrikyo. The way Tenrikyo responded to these times can be seen in Tenrikyo's bulletin, Michinotomo, and various public statements including The Instruction, Yutatsu. Michinotomo carried a variety of essays on labor issues, human rights issues including those of women and buraku, and social work, allowing Tenrikyo thinkers to contend with one another. From the latter half of the Taisho era, however, Michinotomo underwent a significant change in its editorial policy with the result that more discourses on the teachings and faith experience stories appeared instead of doctrinal commentaries on current topics. Although Oyasama's 40th Anniversary was positioned as the "season for social betterment," Tenrikyo as a religious organization began to turn its activities more inward under the slogan to double its membership for the anniversary than transmission of doctrinal interpretation to society or involvement in social movement.
