Abstract

Recently many illustrations are found in textbooks that used at University. However, the educational meaning and effects are not clear. In order to find them, illustrations in the textbooks were classified and three types were found such as illustrations, photo pictures and charts. Several differences of effect on novice and expert learners and gender difference were found. For instance, more illustrations are effective on novice learners and on the other hand, they disturb expert learners due to redundant information on the illustrations.
