Abstract

This paper aims at exploring further into Danish intonation from descriptive linguistic point of view. Although a large number of studies have been made on Danish intonation, little is known and we still lack enough data and knowledge to be utilized in an actual pedagogical situation. This ascribes to the fact that the primary interest of scholars lies in acoustic/experimental analysis and mathematical modeling of intonation. To deepen our knowledge and understanding about Danish intonation, the author conducted field researches and elicited the primary data of intonation. Based on the data, this paper discusses the relationship between several sentence types and terminal tonal patterns and reveals several important basic key concepts and mechanisms operative behind intonation.
