The acetylation of 2-methylnaphthalene(2-MN) using acetylchloride has been studied in the presence of the Lewis acid catalyst. The isomer ratio of methylacetylnaphthalenes(MAN) derived from acetylation of 2-MN is dependent upon the reaction solvent, the mode of addition of reagents, over-all concentration of reactants, and the Lewis acid catalyst. It was observed that the main products of acetylation from 2-MN were 2-methyl,1-acetylnaphthalene(2,l-MAN) and 2-methyl,6-acetylnaphthalene (2,6-MAN). Under appropriate conditions, the formation of either isomer, accompanied by a small quantity of other isomers, can be achieved. The mechanistic implications of the resu1ts of the reaction are mentioned.
