Since the Chin dynasty was removed to the opposite side of the Yang-tzŭ from Chung-yüan (中原), i. e. Central China, due to the oppression of Barbarians, those who accompanied the Imperial Court were not so eager to get back Central China. On the contrary, a tendency of spreading their influence in the southern territory of the river became more remarkable as the time went on. Nevertheless the movement of regaining Chung-yüan became an important political problem. This was due to the fact that the movement was a focal point of contention between political leaders of the government. At first the movement was started by the imperial clan, Szŭ-ma, who aimed at unifying the whole China. Afterwards Huan Wên (桓溫) took advantage of it as an implement of extending his influence within the country. After then Liu Yü (劉裕) justified his enthronement by his temporary success in the movement. Thus the movement of restoring Central China had lost its original significance and characteristics with the change of political conditions in the Eastern Chin.
