Description

In this study, we show the result of measuring transfer rates of digital video contents streamed to different locations in Japan. In addition, we determine whether the transfer rates are sufficiently high to ensure smooth playback of the content at those locations. In the streaming network constructed for this study, one end point was the project server at Hokkaido Univ., and four other end points were chosen on the basis of their distance to the server; by considering phisical and network-rated factors.Two metrics are considered for the evaluation; one is the transfer route from a paticular location to the server, and the other is the time taken for the corresponding transfer. Note that, because the routes cross commercial networks and the SINET (i.e., not commercial but academic) network, the network distances between each end point and the server were equal.
