Functional and historical approaches to urban geography enable us to explain how the city centers of metropolitan areas in Japan have developed and maintained their own spatial structures. The functional approach as an analytical method reveals the way how higher central functions related to retailing, service, and business in the city centers perform and influence the metropolises and their surrounding areas. On the other hand, the historical approach is useful in analyzing the historical development of city centers accompanying the sequential changes in the spatial form and location. Central place theory and the gateway concept can be employed to explain how the city centers are formed and act as the core function of metropolitan areas. These two ideas can be applied to the case of Nagoya, a representative metropolis that began as a castle town in Japan, in order to verify their usefulness for interpreting the locational pattern of city centers. This paper analyzes the locational change of the traditional city center and the development of railway terminal as gateways. It is understood that the case of Nagoya is similar to that of almost all castle towns that have developed on the railways, which were introduced during the modern age. The redevelopment projects of railway stations carried out after the privatization of national railways have accelerated changes in the spatial structure of city centers.
