This study aimed to examine effectiveness of basketball lessons in PE, which placed a circular alternation of “task-games” and “drill-games” in a teaching unit, in terms of students’ skill improvement. The subjects of the study were 115 students in three classes of the 2nd year at a junior high school. To evaluate the students’ improvements in their skills, closed skill tests that consisted on ‘pass’, ‘dribble’, ‘shoot’ and ‘pivot’ were taken at the beginning and the end of the teaching unit. The students’ performance in the scenes of shooting in 4 vs 4 games at the beginning and the end of the teaching unit were videotaped and analysed as open skills. The results of analysis of the closed skills showed that the scores of all types of post-tests significantly increased compared with pre-tests (pass: p<.01, dribble: p<.001, shoot: p<.001, pivot: p<.001). The results of analysis of their performances in shooting scenes in 4 vs 4 games also showed a significant increase in success of combination shots (p<.01). These results indicate that the learning structure that the students were engaged in learning closed skills and open skills in relation to each other by placing a circular alternation of “task-games” and “drillgames was effective for them to improve both types of skills.
