Description

An ultimate earthquake resistance method, which generally offers satisfactory predictions to experimental results of partially concrete-filled steel piers, is available. For some specimens with relatively thick-walled sections, however, rather conservative predictions are obtained. This study is aimed at offering an unified earthquake resistance verification method for partially concrete-filled steel piers with thin-and thick-walled sections. For this purpose, the failure criterion is modified by adding a verification on steel section part of the composite section and using failure strain obtained from the analysis of member segments instead of that from isolated plate elements. Moreover, a stress-strain relation ignoring the compressive strength after reaching the failure strain is employed for the filled-in concrete. The newly proposed method is verified by comparison with available experimental and analytical data, and the results showed that this method gives a better prediction than the previous method. Finally, a parametric study to examine a difference in the prediction by present and previous method is carried out.
