Javanese gamelan, traditional Indonesian ensemble music having hundreds of years of history, has its own polyphony based on methods totally different from those employed in western music. This paper explains its formation, analyzes the characteristics of the music, and introduces our work shop program presented for students to experience a different musical culture through playing in a gamelan ensemble. The students were provided with a simpler ensemble of musical instruments than is usually used, and their performance was assisted by an invited gamelan player. The key ideas obtained from the work shop are the following 5 points. 1. Don’t omit colotomic instruments which indicate the main structure of the music. 2. Choose a core melody which can be played easily. 3. Add some instruments which play ornaments to the core melody, so that the beginner can experience polyphony. 4. Include rhythmically difficult parts, which create poly-rhythmical effects. 5. It is essential that gamelan music players listen to what the other musicians play quite attentively. Therefore, thought this is unconventional, teachers should place instruments in a circular arrangement so that the performers can easily pay attention to one another.
