Description

James Daffy, the hero of “A Painful Case”, is a middle-aged bachelor who is dependent only on his own resources, keeping himself aloof from the confusion of the world around him. He encounters a married woman, Emily Sinico, at a concert. They have a friendship he wishes to deem spiritual. When the friendship starts to evolve into emotional dimensions on her part, he interprets her sudden gesture as a loss of self-control and breaks off with her. Four years later he happens to read the newspaper account which reports the details of her death. Stunned by the news, Daffy gradually realizes his responsibility for her degradation and death, and at the end of this story he keenly feels total isolation and the emptiness of his own life.
