Description

Until the revisional work by Okada and Carson (1983), many taxonomists had confused the genus Phorticella with the genus Zaprionus, because of sharing the silvery or chalky white longitudinal stripes on their head and thorax. First, in this paper, I provided an overview of some taxonomic researches on Phorticella and their possible related genera. Second, I reviewed some hypotheses on the phylogeny of the family Drosophilidae and the previous work by Yassin et al. (2010) having shown that the silvery or chalky white longitudinal stripes on head and thorax are not homologous between the two genera. Finally, I presented some perspectives of researches on the genus Phorticella.
