The purpose of this study is to peruse and enjoy Keats's sonnet titled "To Chatterton". And the author's intention is to demonstrate that Keats is an ardent admirer of Chatterton as the man and as the poet. Thomas Chatterton (1752-1770) was a British poet who fooled scholars by ascribing his poetry to a 15th-century Secular Priest of St. John's, Thomas Rowley. Unable to support himself by writing, Chatterton became dejected and took his own life at age 18. John Keats (1795-1821) was a British poet considered among the greatest in English. His works, melodic and rich in classical imagery, include Endymion who was born in Bristol, the posthumous son of a school-master. This paper explains the Italian sonnet that Keats uses, which is a sonnet containing an octave with the rhyme pattern (ABBA / ABBA) and a sestet of the rhyme pattern (CDC / DCD). This paper is to examine Chatterton as the man that Keats states in the octave. And the paper is to elucidate Chatterton as the poet that Keats emphasizes in the sestet. In this paper the author treats Chatterton's remarkable quality and his genius exhaustively that Keats expresses clearly in the poem.
