説明
In trade with Ch’ing China before the mid-18th century, Li-shih Korea’s trade inevitably resulted in a balance of payments deficit. Therefore, Li-shih Korea had to pay the excess in silver coin to Ch’ing. The trader Chêng-shih was active in this trade and monopolized it in Li-shih Korea’s mission in Pei-ching. The trader Chêng-shih developed and flourished in the time of Chêng Shih-t’ai 鄭世泰. Chêng Shih-t’ai gave orders to Hang 杭 and Su 蘇 Chou in particular for higher grade silk goods that were exported to Li-shih Korea. His special order was a speculative one by advance payment. He made an enormous profit from the trade of Li-shih Korea’s mission in Pei-ching.At that time Li-shih Korea obtained a large amount of silver coin from the trade with Japan. But Japan prohibited the exportation of silver coins through foreign trade by issuing the Jokyo 貞享 and Shotoku 正徳 bans. This caused Li-shih Korea to lose a source of supply of silver coins and consequently to decrease the trade with Ch’ing. Hereupon, Li-shih Korea issued the ban of Wên-tuan 紋緞 and prohibited the importation of the higher grade silk goods in the trade with Ch’ing. Chêng Shih-t’al heard of this ban and stopped the production of the higher grade silk goods. But since his trade was a speculative business, he was ruined and went into bankruptcy. The rise and fall of the trader Chêng-shih was thus much affected by the change of the international trade in East Asia.
