説明

The Amish are opposed to any formal education beyond the eighth grade, and for most, below that level if it requires attending a modern, consolidated public school. They are opposed especially to the emphasis placed on science, the competitive atmosphere and the alien "outsider" teachers found there. They prefer the old- fashioned, one-or two-room school with its limited facilities, in as much as this type of school is more in keeping with the simple life at home. Although many Amish communities have some type of vocational school for those beyond the eighth grade but not yet of legal quitting age, most prefer to train their youth at home in matters dealing with the care and operation of farms and farm households.
