説明
The aim of this thesis is to study Oscar Wilde’s fairy tale, ‘The Fisherman and his Soul’, from the view point of conscious, unconscious, id, collective unconscious, and especially anima by using psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud and C. G. Jung. ‘The Fisherman and his Soul’, which is contained in The House of Pomegranates, has been said to be the most ambiguous and complex of all his short stories. The story was probably written inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s tale ‘The Little Mermaid’ and Matthew Arnold’s ballad, ‘The Forsaken Merman’. All these works include an anima figure. This thesis explores the images of anima in ‘The Fisherman and his Soul’ and some other works and draws a conclusion as to how the fisherman, his soul, and the mermaid in this complex fairy tale are related.
