抄録

This pilot study aims at investigating what are necessary to raise and maintain students’ motivation to study English from both sides of the teachers and students employing Dörnyei’s motivation strategy battery. The participants of the study are 29 students of A university in Saitama, 41 students of B University in Kanagawa and 7 teachers who are currently teaching at A university. The students were asked which strategies they thought effective to raise and maintain their motivation using the Likert Scale. The teachers were asked to answer, which strategies they think important, and they are using or they are planning to use in the future. The result of A university students shows that positive feedback of the efforts they made from the teachers raise their motivation, while the students of B university imply that challenging and intellectually stimulating tasks make them study harder. Some of the strategies the teachers believe important are the following: to show students that you care about their progress, to remind students that the successful mastery of the L2 is instrumental to accomplishment of their valued goals, to encourage the students to use English in class not worrying about making mistakes and to make the tasks interesting. Some of the strategies the teachers are using meet the students’ needs to help them study English enthusiastically and effectively.
