英国ロマン派第一世代に関して、Napoleon がヨーロッパを君主制から開放し、フランス革命お大義、自由・平等・博愛の理念を具現化してくれる人物との彼らの熱のこもった思いは、従来の研究では1798年の「Napoleonによる」スイス侵攻によって無残にも打ち砕かれ、以後彼らはNapoleonに対して関心を抱かなくなったとされている。しかし、英国ロマン派第一世代、特に Coleridge とSouthey を中心として検証した結果、彼らの Napoleon に対する想いは、1802年の終身統領就任に至るまで、あるいはそれ以後の皇帝即位までも揺れ動き、Napoleon の「実像」から離れ、自分たちの「想い」が作り上げた Napoleon という「架空の人物」に自分たちの望み・願いを託していたことが判明した。

On the first generation of the English Romantics, previous studies have concluded that their fervent affections that Napoleon was the figure who could liberate Europe from its monarchial system and who could embody the French Revolution's noble causes or ideas of liberty,equality and philanthropy, were miserably broken to pieces by the French invasion of Switzerland ‘commanded by Napoleon’ in 1798, and that thereafter they began to have no concern for Napoleon. But after inspecting the first generation of the English Romantics, particularly focussing on Coleridge and Southey, it is confirmed that their affections to Napoleon were swaying till his new position as Counsul for Life in 1802, or till his accession to Emperor after that, and that they got estranged from Napoleon's ‘real figure’, conveying their own hopes in ‘an imaginary figure’ as Napoleon that their affections had fabricated.
