Ireland had to have the political change after English power reached there in the latter half of the twelfth century. Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair, was the most powerful king in Ireland then. John de Courcy, `the conqueror of Ulster' and Hugh de Lacy (d. 1186), who was given the extensive land in Meath by Henry Ⅱ, were the invaders for Irish. Native Irish kings and foreign raiders not only fought but allied one another occasionally. Ruaidrí, called `the high king of Ireland' by Irish annalists, concluded the treaty of Windsor with Henry Ⅱ in 1175 and Henry Ⅱ left him to rule Connacht, Ulster and Munster but he could not prevent John de Courcy from invading into Ulster in 1177. After Ruaidrí has fought with Hugh de Lacy in 1170's, a daughter of Ruaidrí married to Hugh de Lacy around 1180. This alliance between Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair and Hugh de Lacy made Henry Ⅱ unpleasant. This paper considers the political relationship among Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair, two invaders, John de Courcy and Hugh de Lacy. The real circumstances of the political change of the later medieval Ireland will emerge by analyzing the each relationship of these three influential persons.
