The fourth stage motors of the Mu and Lambda rockets, developed by the Institute of Space and Aeronautical Science, University of Tokyo, are designed to be spherical motors. Titanium alloys having a high strength-to-density ratio and superior welding characteristics have been selected as the candidate material. Series of studies on the strength and other static mechanical behavior of both the base metal and the welded joints were described, and further the results of fabrication processes including welding, explosive forming and chemical etching were explained.
