説明

This study investigates English-speaking learners' oral narratives in Japanese and English in order to clarify their narrative abilities. Six English-speaking learners of Japanese participated in the experiment. The participants were college students in the U.S. In the experiment, they were asked to tell a story in Japanese and English, based on a picture-book, Frog, where are you? (Mayer, 1969). Their speech data were transcribed and analyzed in terms of how topics were introduced and maintained with regard to "discourse markedness" proposed by Chaudron & Parker (1990). Results show that learners of Japanese had difficulty distinguishing particles wa and ga in the known context.
