Elias Canetti's so-called autobiographical triology, "The Tongue Set Free", "The Torch in My Ear" and "The Play of the Eyes" were written in his late sixties and early seventies. "The Tongue Set Free" -the frrst of the trio logy- deals with the period spanning from his birth to his adolescence of sixteen years old. Apparently Canetti's linguistic environment is quite different from those of other literature writers. Though he selected German language to write his whole literary works and critics throughout his life, German language is not his "mother tongue" in the usual terms at all. He didn't acquire German language naturally in his mother's bosom as an infant. Rather his mother forced him to learn and master the language as his second or third language when he was eight after his father's sudden death. So German language is associated with his mother in the dual terms of meaning. To Canetti German language is not only the language in which he learned at school in Vienna, Austria but the one which served to connect Canetti with his mother's rich cultural life. Reading literature works written in German language with his mother and sharing literary interest between themselves facilitates Canetti to become one of the writers and poets who intentionally and selectively use German language to write. The powerful dual link between Canetti and his mother in the language and literature continues through his entire literary life to form dramatic love-hate relationship which is beyond our imagination. By reading "The Tongue Set Free" carefully and closely, this extraordinary mother-and-son relationship will make its appearrance in the reader's view .
