Abstract

A typhoon that hit Hokkaido in August 200X claimed the lives of two high school students. It occurred during summer vacation; the schoolteachers were shocked by the sudden loss of life amongst their students and became engrossed with various responses. Due to the severity of the situation, they had to pay attention to the “kokoro no kea” (short-term psychological intervention in Japanese) of the students. Even though the teachers knew the word “kokoro no kea,” they had to think about putting the phrase into practice and making concrete measurers between themselves. The author conducted a questionnaire regarding “kokoro no kea” activities in this disaster. What were the reasons why they could create the way of “kokoro no kea”? Those factors are excellent in leadership, shaped mutual understanding among teachers while requesting for external support, and ultimately gave motivation to all the school members to overcome this crisis.
