Abstract

This paper describes the problems that arose in the online format of an introductory kanji course for Non Kanji Background learners and how a teacher devised ways to solve them to achieve the same learning effects as in face-to-face teaching. In the first semester of 2020, Hokkaido University's General Japanese Language Course was held online. Although this was the first attempt, we implemented many face-to-face class contents on Zoom using slide presentations and oral explanations and using Google Classroom for assignment management. On the other hand, it was challenging to develop a method to achieve the same learning effects of face-to-face teaching that requires physical practice, namely writing kanji. The purpose of this paper is to report on how we implemented an online method for teaching how to write kanji, which is difficult to replace with an online method inintroductory kanji courses. Specifically, we used a whiteboard and pen tablet with a webcam as an alternative to face-to-face instruction. As a result, we concluded that although there are some teaching challenges in online teaching, many can be solved by improving both learners’ and teachers’ writing instruction equipment.
