マタイによる福音書18章15-17節に焦点を当てた本研究は、マタイ教会がユダヤ人信徒から成る教会であると考えることが理に適っていることを示す。異邦人蔑視思想を示している現在のかたちのイエスの言葉はマタイの手に由来すること、そしてその思想はマタイ自身のものであることも示される。マタイ福音書がユダヤ人信徒に宛てて書かれたものであるということは一般に認められている一方で、マタイ教会はユダヤ人信徒と異邦人信徒から成っているとしばしば主張されてきた。この主張の根拠は、マタイが自らの福音書の中で、異邦人信仰者と異邦人伝道を強調していることにある。しかし本研究は、マタイ福音書に登場する異邦人信仰者が、マタイ教会の異邦人信徒を暗示していると考えることには無理があることを示す。マタイ教会が異邦人伝道を行っていると考えることは根拠のあることであるゆえ、異邦人信徒は割礼を受け「ユダヤ人」となり、律法を守ることが求められたと考えるのが最も理に適っている。従って、マタイ教会はユダヤ人信徒によって構成される教会であったと帰結される。

It will be demonstrated by this close examination of Matt. 18:15-17 that the Matthean church was made up of only Jewish believers in Jesus. This study will prove that the present form of that passage comes from Matthew's own hand and that the pejorative reference to the Gentiles there reflects his own sentiments. While it has been widely accepted that this Gospel is addressed to Jewish believers, it has often been asserted that the Matthean church was made up of both Jewish and Gentile believers. This assertion has been made mainly on the grounds that in his Gospel Matthew puts emphasis on Gentiles'faith and Gentile mission. However, this study will also make clear that it is premature to regard the Gentile believers in the Gospel narrative as implying Gentile believers of the Matthean church. Since it is well grounded that the Matthean church pursued a Gentile mission when Matthew wrote his Gospel, it is reasonably assumed that it entailed the circumcision. Accordingly, it can safely be concluded that there were no Gentile believers in the Matthean church.
