浄土庭園は, 浄土を象徴的に表現しているという概念に基づいて認識されている.しかし仏堂とその前方部に設けられた園池によって構成されるという条件以外に共通項はきわめて少ない.また浄土を表現するための具体的な手法についても明らかではない点が多い.本研究では, 浄土庭園の初期の事例である法成寺(無量寿院)と平等院を対象に, 庭園の空間構成の特徴に関してその把握を試みた.その際, 庭園景観に影響する周辺景観を含めて考察を行った.その結果, 法成寺では, 周辺環境の影響に左右されない空間が, 仏堂群に囲繞されることによって成立していたと考えられた.このような環境は, 道長の個人的な信仰を支えるための予備的な空間として有効であることが推察された.また平等院では, 小御所の成立によって阿弥陀堂と法会の鑑賞を主体とした, 周辺景観から独立した空間の設営が実現した.従って宇治の環境, 平等院の優れた庭園景観さらに阿弥陀堂との対面という求心的な空間構成は, 阿弥陀に対する個人的な信仰形態を表現するものであると考えられ, 法成寺と同質の性格を示していると推察する.

Jodo-gardens have been classified as gardens representing a symbol of Jodo by nothing but a common feature of the garden's space structures that a pond is laid before the Buddhist hall. Thus skills and techniques utilized expressing Jodo remain to be explored. The present study is intended to examine Hojoji (Muryojuin) and Byodoin Temple's gardens as examples in early period of Jodo-gardens as to represent the features of the garden's space structures. For the sake of this purpose, the surroundings outside of the gardens influencing the sight of them were examined. The results of the present study show that there exists a space surrounded with a series of the Buddhist temples so as to be hidden from the surroundings outside of the garden in Hojoji Temple. Such an environment was effective in constructing a supplement space to support Michinaga's personal faith. In Byodoin Temple's garden an isolated space from the surroundings outside of the garden was designed mainly for an appreciation of Amitabha halls and the Buddhist masses by the establishment of the small Imperial palace (Kogosho). Thus centripetallism of the garden's space structured by environment of Uji, the beautiful sight of Byodoin Temple's garden and its facing the Buddhist halls is considered to be a mode of faith in Amitabha which is similar to the feature of Hojoji Temple's garden.
