The group soil survey was carried out in Atagawa farm of Chiba University by Chiba University, Meiji University, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and Nihon University. The farm has been utilized for cultivating fruits such as Japanese mandarins, subtropical fruit etc, and many researches had been carried out, but information about soil properties was very scarce. Our purpose of survey is to promote our knowledge about soils under different land-use on slope. Soil samples are collected from 3 profile examination Sites established in the forest (Site 1, 2, 3) and in mandarin orchard (Site 4, 5). Following soil properties were investigated; Three phases ratio and bulk density were measured as physical properties. Furthermore, soil pH (H_2O and KCl), EC, Total-C, Total-N, CEC, exchangeable cations (Ca^<2+>, Mg^<2+>, K^+ and Na^+), and phosphate absorption coefficient were measured as chemical properties. Parent material of the soil around Atagawa farm was classified as volcanic ash, judging from bulk density and phosphate absorption coefficient. EC, T-C, T-N, CEC and exchangeable cation were higher in Site 4, 5 (in orchard) than in Site 1, 2, 3 (forest soil). Significant difference of above soil properties between forest (Site 1, 2, 3) and orchard (Site 4, 5) seems to be the results of following factors; Surface soil erosion was occurred in forest located at steep slope (Site 1, 2, 3), and the surface soil had piled up in gentle slope (around Site 4, 5), then orchard was established in the gentle slope, and many managements were carried out such as cutting, banking of soil, application of fertilizers and limes.
