Abstract Sugi sapwoods treated with aqueous acetic acid were carbonized at 400 ℃ for 1h under nitrogen gas to afford wood-vinegar, wood-tar and charcoal. Yield of the wood-vinegar was increased by treatment with aqueous acetic acid, and yields of the wood-tar and the charcoal were decreased. Eleven components in the wood-vinegar were determined by capillary gas chromatography (capillary GC). Amounts of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde and 2- furaldehyde in the wood-vinegar were increased after the acid treatment, but amounts of carboxylic acids, phenols, pyrocatechol, guaiacols, and maltol were almost constant. A mixture of sugi sapwood and charcoal as an additive was carbonized at 400 ℃ for 1h under nitrogen gas. Amounts of acetic acid and propionic acid in the wood-vinegar were increased with the increase in charcoal amount. On the other hand, amounts of furans, maltol, phenols, pyrocatechol and guaiacols were decreased.
