Abstract
application/pdf
In classifier languages, including Japanese, the traditional view is that all bare nouns are essentially number-neutral, requiring these languages to use classifiers as counting units (Chierchia 1998). Recently, however, Watanabe (2017) challenged this view, suggesting that bare nouns in Japanese partitive constructions represent systematic number-sensitivity despite the absence of number-sensitive overt morphology. This study conducted an experiment to clarify whether native Japanese non-linguists are sensitive to the number distinction of bare nouns in partitive constructions. The results show that native Japanese non-linguists are generally sensitive to the number distinction, as suggested in Watanabe.
