Description
The purpose of this paper is to clarify the changes in the references to pre-entrance education through the examination and classification of administrative documents, and to discuss pre-entrance education based on these changes. Specifically, I classified the references to pre-entrance education in the “Guidelines for the Selection of University Students” and other administrative documents. As a result, it was shown that the purpose and the target of pre-entrance education differed from period to period. Especially in the 2010s, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) increasingly requested that universities should provide pre-entrance education. In addition, it became clear that pre-entrance education has emerged since the mid-1990s mainly as a supplementary education based on students' course history and as an education to maintain the study motivation for those who passed the AO examination. Based on these findings, I pointed out that pre-entrance education is an independent educational concept, different from first-year education and remedial education, and that in the future each university will be required to develop pre-entrance education by setting its own objectives, target groups and contents, based on an understanding of the actual situation at their own university.
