Abstract

In this paper, I will focus on four Sino-Japanese verbs, that is, setsumei (“説明”) and kaishaku（“解釈”） in Japanese and their counterparts shuoming (“说明”) and jieshi (“解释”) in Chinese. I will examine the collocational similarities and differences of these four words and their syntactic features. These four verbs are classified as “overlap” verbs, meaning that they partially overlap in meaning. In addition, this paper discusses from the perspective of frame semantics the possible reasons that lead to the semantic differences between setsumei (“説明”) and kaishaku（“解釈”） in Japanese and shuoming (“说明”) and jieshi (“解释”) in Chinese.
