Clinico-statistical Survey of Outpatients and Inpatients in the Department of Oral Reconstructive Surgery

Niigata University Medical and Dental Hospital was established in 2003 by integration of the University Medical Hospital and the Dental Hospital. Since the wards have been integrated and regional medical liaison system has been introduced, Niigata University Medical and Dental Hospital has been playing an increasingly important role as an advanced treatment hospital. In recent years, the aging of society in Japan have been progressing, and there is a need to respond to these changes also in dentistry. A university hospital is now required not only to provide advanced medical care and specific education but also to provide high-quality and advanced medical care to local residents and to work closely with the community. We therefore carried out a clinico-statistical survey of outpatients and inpatients in the Department of Oral Reconstructive Surgery after the hospitals and wards had been integrated to clarify the role in the local community. Results of the survey showed that the total number of new patients from 2003 to 2012 was 16.742. Referral rate increased from 68.9% to 87.6%, and the number of patients without referral sharply declined. The reverse referral rate was about 40%, which is lower than the referral rate. General dental disease, inflammatory disease, disease of skin and oral mucosa, and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) occupied high rate in the outpatient. There were high frequencies of malignant tumor and jaw deformity requiring multidisciplinary treatment in the inpatients. These results indicate that, with the high referral rate, our department was functioning as a department providing a high level of medical care, and also was promoting medical cooperation with other clinics. However, the reverse referral rate should be improved and a medical system should be established to promote further cooperation with the local community.
