Description

Typically wireless networks are assumed in omni-antennas, transmissions among neighboring nodes in wireless networks may interfere with each other. If a node unicast packets with a directional beam, the undesired interference to the neighborhood nodes lying outside its directional beam pattern can be largely reduced. Most studies evaluate the performance of transmission with smart antennas by simulations. In those evaluations the radiation pattern of antennas and wave propagation are ideally modeled. In this paper we evaluated the throughput performance of transmission in variety topologies using smart antennas with directional beamform and omni-directional beamform by experiments based on the UNAGI/ESPAR. We discuss the interference in these topologies with analysing the result of the experiment. As a result, we find that transmission of the smart antennas with narrow directional beamform to the same direction may have a higher throughput due to reduce the interference to the transmitter.
