X shenme de is an enumerated construction in Mandarin Chinese. This paper discusses how the form(new)-meaning(new) paired. Based on the exaptation theory, the paper proposes the form(new) can be explained by the exaptation of shenme which is after the enumerated items. And this paper considers that the meaning(new) comes from persistence of enabling contexts in which shenme means something /anything, and de expresses a kind of category. This case study offers a glimpse of the mechanism of constructionalization.
